Do I need a qualification to be a beekeeper?
Beekeeping isn't straight forward, that said there isn't a rule to say the you need to take up any qualifications in beekeeping to keep bees. We would most certainly recommend that you start your beekeeping adventure with a local beekeeping group connected to the BBKA.
How far can a bee fly?
A honey bee can fly up to three miles! Though on most expeditions away from the hive a bee is likely to fly under a mile.
How fast does a bee fly?
When a worker honey bee is out on the search for food, they can fly up to 20 MPH. Though once they have collected their food and are on the return to the hive they will slow down a little to around 12 MPH. Still very impressive.
How many bees are there in a colony?
In the summer, an average colony will have around 40,000 bees in a hive. The winter is very different and the population drops dramatically to around just 5,000 bees.
